On 15th November, I had one of those magical moments at a gig. The gig in question was in Northampton, hosted by Gomez, who were truly excellent. They even played my favourite song of theirs – Bring Your Lovin’ Back Here. The magical moment was the support act – in this case, Frightened Rabbit, exceeding expectations.
It’s always magnificent when this happens. You know, you go to a gig, looking forward to the main act and you get blown away by the support in the process. It’s happened a few times to me – most memorably when Pure Reason Revolution supported Hope of the States at the Astoria a few years back.
Frightened Rabbit put in an accomplished performance, and they played quite a set for a support act as well – easily around 50 minutes. There were five of them on stage, and the drummer in particular was clearly putting his heart and soul into it. I enjoyed each and every one of the songs they played, but what I understand to be their new stuff, due out in March, sounds particularly good.
I bought an album, the Midnight Organ Fight from the merchandise stall after the gig. I was also lucky enough to chat to the lead singer, Scott Hutchison at the same time. He seemed a thoroughly likeable chap and recommended that particular album. I couldn’t refuse.
I highly recommend you check them out if you haven’t done already! The album’s had repeated listens this week and doesn’t disappoint. And you can see Frightened Rabbit live on their March 2010 tour.
